Moving House: the Most “Forgettable” Aspects

You’ve heard us say it plenty of times before, but it’s one of the most well-known pearls of wisdom up and down the country; moving house is one of the most stressful parts of anyone’s life. You’re in a rush, you’re tired, you might not have had time to shower, and your final destination feels miles away.

It can be extremely useful in a number of life situations to make a list. That way, you’re less likely to forget important things, and everything can feel that bit more manageable.

For that exact reason, we’ve made a list for you. As an outstanding removals company ourselves, we can certainly help ease the stress of moving house to a certain extent, but there are some things you’ve got to do yourselves. Our list covers the most forgettable actions or items that tend to get overlooked on the big day. Hopefully, it’ll help you get everything in order, and make the process as smooth as possible.

An essentials box

It’s so important when moving house to pack everything you need, but it’s also important to not pack what you’ll immediately need. To avoid any confusion, try to set aside a box or bag for everything you’ll need on the road, or in the first few hours of arriving. If there are a few of you in your house, it might not be common knowledge that your headphones are a personal requirement of yours on any journey. If they get packed by another person, trying to be helpful, it could be a few days before you’ve got access to them … that’s a worst case scenario, but the point is valid.

Labeling boxes … and their destinations!

It’s relatively common knowledge that you ought to label your various boxes, advising your removals team as to the rooms they need to be left in. The removals team won’t know exactly what your plans are, understandably, unless you give them clear pointers.

Labelling their destinations, however, is something people often overlook. If you can, getting to your new home before all of your furniture and equipment will allow you to pop a piece of paper reading “BEDROOM 1” on the relevant door. Otherwise, numbered rooms could get a little confusing, and everything could end up in completely the wrong place! As good as removals teams are at their jobs, they haven’t been living with you for months, and likely weren’t involved in the discussions over who gets to have the biggest room.

Telling people

This is one of the most forgettable aspects of moving house. With such an abundance of different organisations, companies, and even online shops that need to know your address, it’s very difficult to keep on top of it all. A good way of keeping track is to make a note, mental or physical, every time you see your address listed somewhere. Start doing this around a month before you move, and you should pick up most of the important ones. Ask yourself “do they need to know my address”, and you won’t go far wrong.

On a more trivial note, let your friends and family know your address as well as updating the important legal documents – you’re going to want plenty of “new home” cards! It can also be a little awkward if people drop in to see you, only to find you’re not there anymore and they’re in a stranger’s house …

Starting early

It’s simple, if you start organising your furniture and possessions early, rather than a few days before the move, it’s going to be less stressful. While it might seem like a great idea at the time, cramming in an extra episode of whatever Netflix show you’re currently into at the expense of preparing is going to hurt in the long run. Without wishing to sound too much like your parents, “it’s always good to be prepared” … no, okay, that did sound a lot like a couple of responsible parents.

This one makes it onto our list purely because it’s so easy to forget about your move until it’s upon you. If our header had been “remember you’re moving”, though, you probably would have skimmed the paragraph somewhat lightly!
