Kings Transport and the Environment

Regardless of your views on the environment, it’s a hot topic these days. Becoming “greener” is one of the biggest concerns for a number of big companies, and the issue is all over the news week in, week out.

Here, we’re taking a look at some recent innovations, courtesy of one of our accreditors, FORS. It’s incredibly important for any transport company to consider the impact they’re having, and we also do everything we can to ensure ours is as reduced as possible.

We’re FORS accredited here at Kings Transport, so we keep up to date with their news and developments. As a leading scheme in the transport industry, they continue to set the bar extremely high for all of their members from an environmental perspective. As a result, we have to maintain an incredibly high standard when it comes to our own fleets.

London petrol and diesel ban

One of the most interesting recent developments in this respect is the ban on 9 London roads of petrol and diesel vehicles. In a bid to cut air pollution, the scheme is even banning some older hybrid cars between the hours of 7:00am – 10:00am and 4:00pm – 7:00pm on weekdays. This is certainly an interesting development to be aware of, as it will prove restrictive for a number of people and companies without newer vehicles.

Other developments

The met police have also introduced a VR video that provides a view from inside the cab of an HGV. This will primarily be used to help cyclists become more aware of the blind spots inside these vehicles, allowing them to become safer on the roads. With measures being taken to ensure the safety of cyclists, could more people ditch their cars for bikes and, in so doing, reduce the harmful emissions throughout the capital?

Finally, FORS also point to another of their members, Veolia, who are to trial electric waste collection vehicles. If successful, this method of waste collection could prove significant; the vehicles are designed to be powered by the waste they collect, with zero emissions.
